Sarah Burton: Designer of the Year

This week saw the British Fashion Awards 2011, and many famous fashion icons receive their due credit. Victoria Beckham tearfully received the Designer of the Year award, Stella McCartney was given the Red Carpet Award, Christopher Kane was rightfully handed a New Establishment award and Alexa Chung was awarded the British Style award (Yes, I know. Never mind. Maybe next year someone who can’t be blown away by this cruel winter wind might win.)

Arguably the most prestigious award of the night, Designer of the Year was handed to Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, for her amazing contribution to fashion in the stellar year she has just had. The Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding gown and her sister Pippa’s bridesmaid dress were two of 2011’s most worshipped dresses, which makes McQueen’s chief designer more than worthy of this award. As Samantha Cameron handed her the award, Burton said “This feels like the icing on the cake on a really amazing year”. As with most Alexander McQueen followers, I was a little dubious over Sarah Burton’s reign on the company, after his shocking and sad suicide in 2010.However, his long time friend and assistant has made a seamless transition into the McQueen empires chief designer position, her presence in the clothes is more than satisfying, but not overpowering. Every collection still screams Alexander, his haunting fabrics and bold prints, elegant cuts and sultry lines – it has not been diluted. Sarah Burton is a more than deserved winner of The British Fashion Councils “Designer of the Year 2011” award.
