Costume queen profile : Colleen Atwood
This blog is about exploring an alternative, darker side of fashion, and I can think of nothing better than cracking into the little corner of the art world where my favourite film director, film music composer, costume designer and couple of actors lie – Bring in Burton World. Tim Burton, being the star of the show, is known for his beautifully dark, twisted, quirky & witty films. He takes something sugary sweet & gives it some edge. In tow he brings Danny Elfman, one of the most talented soundtrack composers known to man (not yet converted? Click this and eat some humble pie). If Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter don’t come tumbling after then something is most likely wrong. On a dangerous level. But Colleen Atwood is the underrated costume designer fulfilling Burton’s ideas, and sewing around the actors. Her work is a big part of what feeds us the Burton Style, whether we know it or not.
Colleen has been nominated for countless Academy Awards and BAFTAS for Costume Design and has won six. She has worked with many directors but most frequently with Burton and her most popular collection was for Alice in Wonderland last year. Alice in Wonderland (book, 1951 Disney film and 2010 Burton film) has always been a huge obsession of mine, so to see Atwood contribute to that was brilliant – every dress she made for grown up Alice was elegant, delicate and yet haunting.. Atwood told Movieline “Alice isn’t a ten-year-old girl, she’s a young woman - there’s a nod to the classical need for that. But once she goes into Wonderland, we took it to another place.”
Other notable films with beautiful costumes include Edward Scissorhands(1990) Silence of the Lambs (1991), Little Women (1994) Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), Chicago (2002), Big Fish (2003), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007), and Nine (2009).
